According to this doctrine, the initial verse is interpreted as the original creation of the universe, while the subsequent verses describe the preparation of the Earth for something greater. But verse 2 through to 2:1 is considering the restoration of the earth in preparation for the creation of man and subsequent events. The Genesis Gap philosophy is based therefore on a theory that considers the above quote and many other scriptural passages as biblical evidence for an extremely ancient creation and for cataclysmic events that took place, on an ancient earth, that predate Adam's creation, or in their arguments (pre-adamic history). Consequently, according to this theory there would be considerable expanses of time between these two verses of scripture.
