This is the first volume of the collected teachings of Harvey Daiho Hilbert Roshi. Daiho Roshi is the dharma heir of Ken Hogaku Shozen McGuire Roshi who was in turn the dharma heir of Soyu Matsuoka Roshi, one of the first Japanese Zen Masters to bring Zen to the west. This volume and the ones that will follow in the collection, are the diary entries and blog posts of Daiho Roshi reflecting his practice of living Zen. His teachings, while unique to him, are in the same spirit and style of the founder of his Soto Zen lineage, Matsuoka Roshi. Matsuoka's teachings are less well known than those of other Japanese Zen teachers who during the 1950s and 1960s were active in introducing Zen to western students. This is partly because Matsuoka had no published works during his lifetime and those summarizing the intro- duction of Zen to the west tended to overlook his valuable contributions. Still Center Publications is currently seeking to make Matsuoka's teachings more available.
