  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1 / W.5.1 / W.6.1: Write opinion pieces/arguments on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. 
    • Alignment: Chapter 1 and Chapter 5 cover gathering information for and organizing persuasive letters and essays, including using an "Order of Importance" format.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2 / W.5.2 / W.6.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
  • Alignment: The workbook provides specific instruction on writing essays, book reports, and research papers. It teaches students to organize information by category, location, and comparison.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.3 / W.5.3 / W.6.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events.
    • Alignment: Chapter 6 focuses on Creative Writing, defining plot, setting, and theme, and requiring students to write their own short stories.

2. Production and Distribution of Writing

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.4 / W.5.4 / W.6.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
    • Alignment: The workbook introduces the five-paragraph essay format as a primary tool for organization and covers identifying the intended audience.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.5 / W.5.5 / W.6.5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing.
    • Alignment: Chapter 2 is entirely dedicated to Pre-writing, teaching students how to take notes and plan their projects before drafting.

3. Conventions of Standard English (Language)

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1.F / L.5.1: Produce complete sentences, recognizing and correcting inappropriate fragments and run-ons.
    • Alignment: Chapter 3 includes specific exercises for recognizing and fixing run-on sentences and building complex sentences using conjunctions.
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1.E: Form and use prepositional phrases.
    • Alignment: Exercises in Chapter 3 require students to make sentences more interesting by adding prepositional phrases.
