by Thomas A. McCluskey (Author)
The Irish Telegram Boy is the story of a boy who grows up believing he is a "good-for-nothing" and spends much of his life trying to prove otherwise. Born into poverty in a Dublin tenement in 1944, Thomas McCluskey endures family tensions, bullying, an absent father, and a mother who struggles to show him love. At sixteen, he leaves Ireland for New York, hoping for a better life.
But the wounds of childhood follow him. Through difficult jobs, troubled relationships, marriage, fatherhood, and years of escalating alcoholism, Thomas slowly loses control of his life. The memoir opens at his lowest point: lying paralyzed at the bottom of his basement stairs.
From there comes a remarkable story of rebirth. Through therapy, Alcoholics Anonymous, faith, and hard-won self-awareness, Thomas confronts his past, breaks a cycle of generational pain, and finally discovers his own voice.
